De Ierse groep U2 zitten midden in de her-planning van hun 360° worldtour, die eerder dit jaar werd onderbroken door een val van zanger Bono (mei 2010) tijdens repetities waardoor hij gewond raakte aan zijn rug.
Forbes.com heeft alle gegevens becijferd aan de hand van o.a. concerten, merchandising, muziekverkoop en andere commerciële deals over de periode juli 2009 tot en met juni 2010. Voor U2 is dat uiteraard allereerst hun optredens, maar ook over andere deals w.o. die met Live Nation (12 jaar deal voor £50m, waardoor Live Nation grip heeft op de merchandising, sponsoring en de officiële website van U2) en de release van hun album 'No line on the horizon' op 27 februari 2009. De wereldtour startte op 30 juni 2009 en haalde tot nu toe 100% uitverkochte shows (vanwege de positie van het bijzondere podium kunnen alle plaatsen worden verkocht) in Europa en Noord-Amerika. Dit jaar staan verdere shows gepland in Europa en in 2011 in Noord Amerika.
De headline show van de groep op het Glastonbury Festival in Engeland op 25 juni jl. ging dus niet door.
Grootste inkomstenbron is de volledig uitverkochte wereldtour tot nu toe. Waarvan gesteld dat er 1.3 miljoen kaartjes werden verkocht tegen een gemiddelde prijs in de VS van $94.
Interessant is om te zien dat een aantal topartiesten in de lijst hun carriére startten in de 80's. Behalve U2, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen (al in de 70's) en Madonna samen goed zijn voor een bedrag van rond de $370 million dollar.
Grootste verrassing in de lijst is Lady Gaga, die haar carriere eigenlijk nog maar net is gestart en in de periode juli 2009 tot juni 2010 een bedrag binnenhaalde van rond de $62m (£40.5m).
Interessant om te melden is dat AC/DC in de VS een gemiddelde per concert ophaalde van $2.3m over de periode juli 2009-juni 2010, goed voor in totaal $114m (£74.5m)
Beyonce de #3 op de lijst verdiende de helft van haar inkomsten uit deals met Nintendo, L'Oreal en haar kledinglijn.
Kenny Chesney is de meest verdienende country-artiest in de lijst op #9.

U2 are highest-earning band in the world
The Irish pop group are in the middle of staging their 360° tour which has been disrupted this summer by an injury to Bono's back.
They were estimated to have made £84.9m, according to Forbes.com, including ticket and merchandise sales and a steady-selling back catalogue.
In March 2008, it was confirmed that U2 signed a 12 year deal with Live Nation worth an estimated £50 million, which includes Live Nation controlling the band's merchandise, sponsoring, and their official website.
The band's latest album No line on the horizon was released on 27 February 2009.
The U2 360° Tour began on 30 June 2009 and featured European and North American stadium dates in 2009, with additional shows in Europe in 2010 and North America in 2011. The shows feature a 360-degree staging/audience configuration, in which the fans surround the stage from all sides.
U2 were scheduled to headline the Glastonbury Festival on 25 June 2010, but an injury to Bono's back during preparation for the third leg of the U2 360° Tour led to the postponement of the entire leg. Bono stated, "I'm heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special—we even wrote a song especially for the Festival." Rescheduled concert dates have been announced for 2011.
Meanwhile, heavy metal group AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen and Madonna - whose songs have been featured on the hit sitcom Glee - also appeared in the round-up.
Lady Gaga, who has also been on tour this year, was one of the few members of the younger generation of artists to make the top 10.
Beyonce Knowles earned more than her hip hop star husband Jay-Z, with the couple coming in third and sixth place respectively.
Despite a turbulent few years, Britney Spears was in fifth place, with her earnings put at £41.8m.
Coldplay came in equal 10th place, thanks to money made while still touring in support of their 2008 album Viva La Vida.
